The only thing I managed to play this week is Legendary Encounters – X-Files. I enjoy the ‘Legendary’ series and the ‘Encounters’ subseries and this one did not disappoint in that regard. For those who don’t know, this is a deck-building game. Each turn, you begin by drawing a card from the conspiracy deck (bad stuff) and then use your cards to try to defeat the bad guys and recruit better cards onto your team.
I played three games and lost two but I never felt the game was too large of a challenge. In arranging the Conspiracy deck as instructed, the difficulty slowly ramps up so that, in theory, the quality of your deck increases as the difficulty increases.
My only complaint about this one is that there seems to be too little deck mitigation. It was noticeable that we were not able to ‘defeat’ cards from our deck that had outlived their usefulness. This is an extremely important mechanic that we could not seem to take advantage of though it is possible we simply did not have the cards to do so.
Finally, one more down for my ultimate Legendary collection. I only need Firefly and Buffy to finish off the set….well, those and a few expansions for Legendary Marvel.
